Echocardiogram
What is an Echocardiogram?
A transthoracic echocardiogram (echo) uses ultrasound technology to create detailed images of your heart and how blood flows through it. This safe and non-invasive test helps assess the structure and function of your heart.

Your doctor may refer you for an echocardiogram to evaluate:
-
The function of your heart valves, including checking for regurgitation (when blood flows backward through a valve)
-
The size, structure, and movement of the heart chambers and walls
-
Stenosis (narrowing) of heart valves or major blood vessels
-
The presence of tumours, blood clots, or inflammation of the heart lining (pericarditis)
-
Progression or improvement of existing heart conditions over time

We provide both adult and paediatric echocardiography and have a skilled team of cardiac sonographers. If you have a preference, please let us know when booking, and we will do our best to accommodate your request.

What to expect during the echocardiogram test
You’ll be asked to undress from the waist up and lie comfortably on your left side. A sonographer will place small ECG electrodes on your chest to monitor your heart rhythm during the scan.

A gel will be applied to your chest, and a small handheld probe (transducer) will be moved gently across your skin to capture ultrasound images of your heart. The room may be dimmed to improve image quality.

You may be asked to hold your breath briefly or change position during the test. Apart from mild pressure from the probe, the procedure is painless and risk-free.

How do I prepare for an echocardiogram?
No special preparation is required — you can eat and drink as usual before your test.
For your comfort, wear a two-piece outfit (such as a shirt and pants or skirt), as you will need to remove your top. Women will also be asked to remove their bra to allow proper access to the chest. A sheet or gown will be provided for modesty.

How long does an echocardiogram take?
An echocardiogram takes approximately 45 minutes.
Please arrive 15 minutes early to allow time for check-in.
