Dr Gerald Yong is an Interventional Cardiologist with a special interest in structural heart disease, obstructive coronary conditions, and general cardiology. He is recognised for his leadership in minimally invasive cardiac treatments, offering advanced solutions that reduce the need for open-heart surgery.
His expertise spans transcatheter valve replacements (TAVI), valvuloplasties, and closure of structural heart defectssuch as ASD, VSD, PDA, and paravalvular leaks. Dr Yong also specialises in complex and high-risk coronary interventions, including chronic total occlusions.
In 2009, Dr Yong performed Western Australia’s first Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVI), marking a milestone in the field of structural cardiology. He continues to play a leading role in the advancement of interventional techniques, frequently training and proctoring new operators in Australia and Asia.
Dr Yong graduated with Honours in Medicine from the University of Western Australia. He completed his General Cardiology training and Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at Royal Perth Hospital, followed by subspecialty training in Structural Cardiac Interventions at Evanston Hospital, Chicago, and the Montreal Heart Institute, Canada.
He has participated in numerous national and international research studies, particularly in TAVI and structural heart disease, and has been widely published and invited to speak at major international conferences.
Dr Yong is a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH), Royal Perth Hospital, Mount Hospital, and St John of God Murdoch Hospital. He currently serves as Head of Structural Heart Intervention and Interventional Head of the High-Risk Aortic Stenosis and TAVI Program at Fiona Stanley Hospital. He also participates in the on-call roster for general cardiology and acute angioplasty at FSH and RPH.
