Clinical Specialisation

Chest Pain

Dr Yong has a special interest in minimally invasive, keyhole procedures for the treatment of chest pain caused by coronary artery disease, including coronary angiography and stent placement.

Heart Valve Disease

Dr Yong is a recognised expert in aortic valve disease. For appropriate patients he offers Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVI), a minimally invasive procedure.

Dr Yong also specialises in the management of mitral and tricuspid valve disease. and other complex mitral valve disorders. He offers the full spectrum of contemporary transcatheter therapies, including valvuloplasties, Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair (TEER) and Transcatheter Valve Replacement for suitable patients, providing effective minimally invasive alternatives to surgery.

He works closely with a heart team including cardiac surgeons in comprehensive management of valvular heart disease.

Structural Heart Disease

Dr Yong also specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of the following cardiac conditions and structural heart defects:

  • Left Atrial Appendage Closure (LAAC)

A minimally invasive keyhole procedure that reduces the risk of stroke in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AF) who are unsuitable for, or wish to avoid, long-term blood-thinning medication. Dr Yong performs LAAC using the latest transcatheter techniques, providing an effective alternative for carefully selected patients.

  • Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) Closure

A patent foramen ovale is a small flap-like opening between the upper chambers of the heart that fails to close after birth. While common and often harmless, it may be associated with unexplained (cryptogenic) stroke or other specific medical conditions in selected patients. Dr Yong provides comprehensive assessment and performs minimally invasive PFO closure when clinically indicated.

  • Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) 

An atrial septal defect is a congenital hole between the upper chambers of the heart, which may lead to enlargement of the right side of the heart, breathlessness, heart rhythm disturbances, or pulmonary hypertension. Many suitable defects can be treated using a minimally invasive catheter-based closure, avoiding the need for open-heart surgery.​

  • Other structural heart disease

Dr Yong also has extensive experience in the assessment and transcatheter treatment of a broad range of structural heart conditions, including:

  • Paravalvular leak (PVL) closure

  • Ventricular septal defect (VSD) closure

  • Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) closure

  • Other complex congenital and acquired structural heart abnormalities requiring advanced catheter-based intervention.
